Watched Blood Into Wine Last Night: Very Cool Movie...Now Where IS That Tool CD?

Courtesy IMDB
This movie was on TV last night and we were intrigued so we gave it watch and it was super interesting.  It is a documentary about the Vineyard that Maynard James Keenan lead singer of Tool and A Perfect Circle in Jerome, Arizona.  It is actually the story of two men (and partners), Maynard and Eric Glomski who is the wine maker of the pair.

The movie is a discussion of the entrepreneurial journey these two have undertaken in Arizona which is not exactly a hot bed of wine in America.  It talks about the money they spent (four failed plantings in one vineyard at $35K a pop - yikes) and it talks about the wine from both a philosophical and practical perspective.  Philosophical from the sense of the magic of wine experiences and what drives someone to sink a LOT of money into a venture with high risk and at best some reward.

Maynard's label Caduceus has become a bit of a cult wine in the same way he is a bit of a cult figure from a musical perspective.  Tool/A Perfect Circle are not necessarily our favorite bands but the music is undeniably interesting and has played part in the soundtrack of our lives.  This movie has the unexpected outcome of us wanting to dig back into our CD collection to find the Tool CD we know is there and MP3's that are out there somewhere.

As a wine documentary it goes across the board with discussion of wine making challenges in the high desert.  There is a cameo by James Suckling....interesting and there is the impact of someone with celebrity and street cred turning to wine as a business and in essence putting his music on the back burner to do this.  He talks the lingo and looks to be all in on this.  There is a scene in Whole Foods where he and Eric are meeting fans and signing bottles.  It is an interesting collision of wine and fame.  All in all a great wine movie and worth the time to watch.  Fascinating stuff.

Keep on drinking!
