Wine Review - 2010 The People's Pinot Noir: Such A Great Smelling Wine
This wine was provided to us and it is the red companion to the Sauvignon Blanc we tried about a month ago. Check out our review of that wine here.
This wine was opened about 15 minutes before we drank it and immediately it had very little in common with most of the Kiwi Pinot Noirs we have seen of late. It is not the light and grassy smelling version we are used to drinking. This wine is dark and smells big and beautiful. We have seen Pinots like this from California and maybe France but not from NZ....not like this.
Bottom line, the look of this wine is much, much darker than the usual Pinot Noir from New Zealand. This wine from Central Otago, is cherry red with a slight amount of transparency but is not light in colour. Super unique compared to the norm and super interesting.
The nose is fantastic on this wine. Exemplary. Reserved in some ways but very much a fruity and robust smell with blackberry and plum but with a fragrance that is very attractive. There is a solid note of oak in the nose which makes for a complexity that pushes the nose over the top. We call it a very balanced nose. Best we have had in a long while.
Yes again (we know we are repeating ourselves), the flavour profile is nothing like NZ from Pinot Noir, California maybe, Kiwi not so much. This would be considered a fruit bomb in Kiwi terms but this uniqueness blows us away. It is a very elegant and lovely wine....great with food and great on its own. Delicious! Blackberries and vanilla from oak are the main things we get on the palate but it is such a warm and tannic undertone that it makes for a great tasting experience. There is a leathery or smokey component to this as well which add a savoury flavour that we would normally expect to be more vegetal or grassy from NZ Pinot Noir. This one is not normal in a good way.

This wine retails for $20 locally and given its diversion from the norm we think it is worth that price for sure.
Keep on tasting!
