Wine Review - 2008 Septima Septimo Dia Chardonnay: Golden And Silky Chardonnay From Argentina....Olé!

Septima Septimo Dio Chardonnay

This wine is from Bodegas Septima in Argentina is part of a larger Wine Company called Aveníu Brands.  Somewhere along the way we feel like we have tried a Red from this Bodegas but we can't place it and that is frustrating in comparative terms.  The vineyards are located in Agrelo which is in the Mendoza region.  In any event, this wine retails for $25 but we got it on sale closer to $18.

The wine has a golden hue which shows obvious time in oak, but upon further research we found that 40% of the wine spent 8 months in new oak barrels.  Either way, this is the type of traditional Chardonnay we have enjoyed in the past.  The golden colour seems to have green around the edges which kind of reflects the fact there is some fruit in the wine.  Overall, a nice looking wine.

The nose is very, very nutty.....almonds, walnuts, cashews....we are not exactly sure which one.  But, we do get nuts as a dominant smell.  The secondary note is hot buttered caramel with a touch of cardamom.  So, as you can tell there is not a lot of crisp fruit here.  No fresh fruit notes to speak of but maybe baked pears...or some starfruit.  Call it a neutral fruit nose but the fruit that comes through is sweet, though the wine leans to the dry side.  It is an interesting nose for sure.

The flavours are very interesting as well.  There is a slightly muted palate when compared to the nose but it is a very nice tasting wine.  The flavours have only a touch of sweetness which adds to a balanced mouth feel though it is tarter than it smells for sure. There are more fruit notes in the taste, which includes lemon zest and more pears but the body is quite nice.  There is a little heft when you swirl the wine in your mouth.  This is a cooler weather wine for sure.  Where we enjoy Kiwi Sauv Blanc as a warm weather wine, this is a great Fall wine that is not too sweet and certainly not too savoury.  There are also nuts on the palate but they are soft and we don't find this so much buttery as we find it silky and maybe even a little on the oily side (certainly not in a bad way).  We like it a lot.

   Tasting Notes: Score:
Sight (0-5) Golden coloured Chardonnay with obvious time in oak.  Nice look to it. 4.0
Smell (0-5) A nutty nose with baked pears and cardamom, delicious smelling wine. 4.5
Taste (0-10) A cool weather white wine with a good amount of body and balance with a touch of residual sugar and some nice fruit.  Overall a great tasting New World Chardonnay. 8.0
  Total: 16.5 / 20 (82.5%)

At a regular retail price of $25 it is good wine.....on sale at $18 it is a fantastic value.  If you can get it on sale, buy a lot.  If you can't, buy a couple of bottles.

Keep on tasting!

Chris & Shannon
