Wine Review - 2011 G7 Reserva Carménère: Chilean Wine Two Nights In A Row....For Sure!

G7 Carménère

That's right folks....Chilean Carménère two nights in a row.  We are sooo cray-cray.  This was another Port of Wines Festival purchase that was a late in the show selection so we wanted to make sure we were not off our rockers for choosing this one.

This Carménère is from the Loncomilla Valley in Chile made by G7 Wines and is 100% from the variety.  So far so good.

The wine is not as dark as last night but still has that violet hue consistent with Carménère.  In comparison again, the wine is not as thick and the legs stream down the glass a lot more quickly.  Thin is not at all the adjective to describe this wine, just thinner than last night's version.

The wine smells of green pepper and an outdoors-y fresh field smell.  So, let's say vegetal with a nice subtle cherry blossom smell.  Not flowery but not overly fruity either. Interesting is the word that comes to mind.  Somewhat unique for the fact that there is some restraint on the nose that works for this wine.  It definitely does NOT go into that barnyard realm we like to see in our Cab Francs and all in all is a good showing.

The flavours are quite different from last night's wine as well, but very good on their own.  They are quite unique as well with notes of plum skin and cranberry notes which are accompanied by a touch of residual sugar which adds some balance to what is otherwise strong tannins.  The oak is subtle and does not overpower the fruit in the wine.  Where the wine is vegetal on the nose is also has some herbaceous notes on the palate as well.  Thyme maybe?  Something with an earthiness to it.  It is a complex little wine with a nice lingering finish.

   Tasting Notes: Score:
Sight (0-5) Dark wine with violet colour but not overly thick 4.0
Smell (0-5) Green pepper and vegetal notes hit you first but there are cherry blossoms, fruit, and oak all in there as well.  Somewhat complex 4.0
Taste (0-10) Plum skins and cranberry are balanced with good tannins and herbs.  More on the tart side with a nice long finish on the palate. 8.25
  Total: 16.25 / 20 (81.25%)

This wine clocks in at $15 locally the Quality Price Ratio (QPR) on this stands out a lot.  While last night's had some level of elegance to it, this one is just plain yummy to drink.  This one is another buy recommendation.  These Chilean wines are sitting well with us these days.

Keep on tasting!

Chris & Shannon
